THE ROMAN ROAD PARTY

A quirky, humourous day out on Roman Road, Bow, E3.

Commissioned artists Ben and Holly, the Laundrettas and pH each created distinctive areas on the street, which included a village fete obstacle course, a sea-side area and the Laundromat of Love. SPACE worked with local residents to create activities for the day and appointed artists to create a series of market stalls and live art performances running along the Roman Road.

Other attractions included a giant safety match construction, a portrait tattoo parlour, a shopping trolley conga, Bow's strongest man, and a gang of cardigan wearing fans loitering on the corner of Cardigan Road.

Artists at the party included FrenchMottershead, Hayvend Laboratories, Lottie Child, Marysa Dowling, Ashley McCormick, Daniel Lehan, Kay Aplin, David Brazier, Erica Scourti, Esther Collins, Gitte Bog, Harald Smykla, Helena Bryant, Pouloumi Desai, Kazzum Childrenís Theatre, Lizzie Hughes, Daedalus, Maria Yiasoumi, B.O.W Social Club, 5th Wheel Productions, Raimi Gbadamosi.

ONE NIGHT GRANDSTAND

Every young kickabouter's dream is to see their goal in an action-replay on the stadium screens. This one-off football game was produced within the Ranwell Estate complete with flood-lighting, a live PA belting out real commentary by professional commentator Phil Parry (BBC London), whilst live images of the local kids playing football was projected on three large screens surrounding the football pitch to the sound of roaring crowds and the grandstand theme tune.

STRANGERS WITH ANGELIC FACES

What does it mean to be a Stranger? The term constitutes such a broad area of life in modern society. Alien migrants penetrate borders, travellers render maps meaningless, the homeless who make the street their own, bizarre subcultures that make city life so dynamic.

'Strangers With Angelic Faces' was an explorative project curated by Levent Calikoglu which explored these issues through a diverse range of mediums within a gallery setting.
