Onedotzero
EVENT:
onedotzero - adventures in motion
CLIENT:
Weiden+Kennedy
LOCATION:
Theatre Avenue, Southbank, London, UK
THE BRIEF:
To fill a huge facia of the National Theatre with projections to feature as part of of London's onedotzero festival - adventures in motion held at the BFI southbank. The chosen area was the long wall running down the edge of Theatre Avenue. The projected media was created by the Weiden+Kennedy team working with the programmer Karsten Schmidt (aka toxi). The software was a Java application which formed colourful words from live RSS feeds streaming in from Twitter, Facebook and other social media. The letters formed could then be manipulated by further software utilising the motion sensors on the Nokia N900, running on the Maemo (Linux based) OS.
DESCRIPTION:
GaiaNova Productions produced a detailed feasibilty study including 3D visualisations of the space, a detailed projection design, budgets, risk assessment and method statements. The feasiblity study was used to secure the necessary permissions from the multiple organisations involved in the project including the onedotzero festival, The BFI Southbank, The Southbank Centre, The Lord Mayor's Thames Festival and The National Theatre. GaiaNova also assisted running tests on the various software builds and an outdoor test run using with a single projector.
GaiaNova then went on to production manage the build and the installation while it was operating and open to the public and finally the safe and prompt removal of everything at the end of the event. The final installation used six 18,000 HD Christie projectors edge-blended to create one giant image running down the side of the National Theatre, all controlled from the tiny N900 held in someone's hand. The results were spectacular.
