DESCRIPTION:

The British Museum is one of the oldest and arguably one of the greatest national public museums in the world. They decided to celebrate their birthday with a spectacular free event that reflected the breadth of their worldwide collection in a way that would appeal to audiences of all ages.

International story-tellers performed amongst the exhibits; musicians performed world music from India, Japan and the Middle East; and children and adults performed specially created dance pieces inspired by the collections. Celebrities such as author Vikram Seth read from his own 'Beastly Tales' whilst Alan Bennett harked back to a halcyon schoolboy heyday nestling somewhere in the forties with a rendering of Richmal Crompton's 'Just William'. Blue Peter presenter Konnie Huq read 'The Epic of Gilgamesh', whilst Sandie Toksvig recited tales from the Norse Myths as a horde of Vikings re-enacted battles on the Museum's forecourt.
