EVENT:

My Secret Heart

LOCATION:

International Tour

THE BRIEF:

Earlier in the year, GaiaNova were approached by video artist collective Flat-e to realise an idea they had for an innovative video projection installation, as part of a forthcoming live show.

'My Secret Heart' is a new commission by charity Streetwise Opera, comprising of music by electronic composer Mira Calix and video visuals by Flat-e, working together with approximately 100 homeless performers.

DESCRIPTION:

Our task was to create a 360-degree cylindrical projection screen, measuring some 8 feet high and 16 feet in diameter, forming a seamless image some 50 feet wide around its circumference. The whole structure needed to be entirely self-supporting, to be compact  and lightweight enough for touring internationally, and able to be fully assembled by two non-specialists in under two hours. Overall quite a challenging commission!

Drawing on our extensive video design and engineering experience, plus borrowing a little from our knowledge of building large and lightweight structures with our geodesic domes, we created a solution based on a tubular aluminium framework supporting six LCD video projectors within. We worked with the artists from the outset, producing a conceptual design, developing final technical designs for the overall structure and all its sub-assemblies; we sourced manufacturers and suppliers for all the different components, we integrated them in to a working system, carried out all the testing and finally developed a training program for the whole rigging and operation of the installation, before handing the completed project over to the artists.
